Connectivity is increasingly becoming a key factor capable of enhancing the viewer experience at sporting events. Thanks to the greater capacities of the telecommunications networks, fans can now enjoy an immersive experience that goes beyond the live show they are watching and sharing in real-time through social networks.
Cellnex has become one of the main players in industrial projects of this kind in Europe after the deployment of a Distributed Antenna System (DAS) at Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium to provide enhanced 4G connectivity throughout the premises of the sporting venue. Initially, Vodafone and O2 customers can benefit of this enhanced connectivity, although the design of the installation will allow other operators set to be connected in the future. Likewise, the system is ready for the future arrival of 5G.
In addition to Ethihad Stadium, Cellnex has promoted similar projects at the Wanda Metropolitano in Madrid, San Siro in Milan, Juventus in Turin or the Olympic Stadium in Rome.
Mick Goulding, Head of Commercial at Cellnex UK, stated: “We are delighted to have partnered with Manchester City Football Club to provide this important connectivity solution for the Etihad Stadium. Fans will benefit from an efficient and high-quality signal to enable them to stay connected while they enjoy the quality football experience“.
Greg Swimer, Chief Technology Officer at City Football Group, underlined that they “are pleased to have worked with Cellnex Telecom for this project. This is part of a long-term plan for us to improve connectivity around the Etihad Campus. Cellnex has a track record in the installation, management and maintenance of mobile network communications. This project will allow all those that visit our stadium to benefit from reliable 4G, as well as the prospect of even faster 5G signal when it is available on their devices. We know how important connectivity is to our fans and we are constantly looking for new ways for them to capture and share their experiences at the Etihad Stadium“.
